About Us
The Center for STEMM Mentorship at Stanford is a pilot initiative launched in 2022 that works in service of building healthy research teams and improved mentorship alliances in STEMM labs.
Our program approach uniquely focuses on the unit of the research team, serving whole teams all together inclusive of faculty, students, postdocs, and staff. We employ lessons from successful teams across diverse sectors (business, academia, and even sports!) to implement and elevate the practice of mentorship in a research team context.
We are passionate in our belief that an effective mentor-mentee relationship is a two-way street—an alliance with a collaborative spirit rooted in a vulnerability-based trust, in which both mentors and mentees are comfortable in acknowledging what they don’t know, admitting mistakes when they occur, providing honest feedback, readily asking for help, sharing failure stories, and celebrating successes. Such a relationship means that both a mentor and a mentee are active partners in the relationship working toward the same goals, and enabling learning and growth to go both ways. This alliance considers the whole person, their well-being, and their career development overall as STEMM leaders and future leaders.
No matter one’s career stage, for a faculty member or student to learn with one’s team is to amplify the opportunities for healthy mentorship alliances to thrive across a team at all levels.
Purpose Statement
At the Center for STEMM Mentorship, our goal is to help each team we work with create a culture where each team member is respected and supported in reaching their full potential. We recognize and celebrate both group and individual achievements, fostering a collaborative environment where teamwork is valued as a key to success. By promoting a healthy, cooperative team dynamic, we believe that collective efforts lead to greater growth, success, and well-being for every team member.
