Center for STEMM Mentorship at Stanford

Mentorship. Two-way. Collaborative.

Empowering members of STEMM research teams to grow professionally and to nurture healthy working environments in which mentorship alliances can thrive throughout a team.

Our Mission

To cultivate the well-being, scientific growth, and personal and professional development of members of STEMM research teams—students, postdocs, staff, and faculty, all together—by advancing whole person-centric, team-oriented mentorship rooted in principles that drive successful academic, industrial, entrepreneurial, and athletic teams.

Relationships

An effective mentor-mentee relationship is a two-way street, an alliance with a collaborative spirit, in which a mentor and mentee are active partners working toward the same goals.

Clarity

All STEMM students and postdocs should have effective relationships with their research advisors—with clarity of purpose, intent, and expectations going both ways.

Teams

Entrepreneurial principles and lessons from successful teams in diverse sectors can help strengthen mentorship training and practice for academic researchers in STEMM labs.

Training

All professors, postdocs, and students in STEMM should receive training and support to help build mentorship skills and to help navigate mentor-mentee alliances effectively.

Culture

Mentorship training, education, and practice should be understood and valued by trainees, faculty members, and institutions as intrinsic to career advancement and success.

Institutions

STEMM faculty members and research trainees should be supported and empowered by their academic institutions to access programs that promote mentorship excellence.
